DiversityMBAPrep.com hosted its first Tuesday TwitterTalk September 25th  on Refining Your MBA story. You can download a recording of the talk from Dropbox. Here is a brief summary of the call:

Refining Your Story #1: determine what school wants to know and what they value in applicants #diverseMBA

  • #MBA programs usually looking for leadership, teamwork, academic readiness and inquisitiveness, self-awareness #diverseMBA
  • Some #MBA programs want candidates with global perspective, community orientation/ commitment #diverseMBA

Refining Your Story #2: brainstorm and identify examples and experiences #diverseMBA

  • Find someone who knows you well professionally to help you brainstorm examples for your #MBA essays #diverseMBA

Refining Your Story #3: figure out the real story (S-T-A-R method) #diverseMBA

  • STAR method is used most often in interviews, but works well for #MBA essays too – Situation, Task (optional), Action, Result #diverseMBA

Refining Your Story #4: write and rewrite and rewrite getting feedback along the way #diverseMBA

  • Don’t wait until the last minute for feedback – I always have people ask for feedback 1-3 days before deadline. #diverseMBA
  • Don’t ask everyone for feedback on my #MBA essays – that’s too many opinions. Find people that you trust #diverseMBA
  • After you’ve gotten feedback on essays though, most important person to trust is yourself #trustyourgut #diverseMBA
